‘Backwaters’ – the annual management fest of IIM Kozhikode is a confluence of corporates, young aspiring leaders and scholars to facilitate exchange of ideas and tackle problems that have been crafted to create new frontiers in the realm of management. Backwaters is a test of the acumen and experience of the brightest students of the top management institutes across the country. They are tested across all the verticals of management, leaving no stone unturned in the quest for excellence. We have grown immeasurably since our inception, with 25 events, 22000+ participants, across the multitude of B-schools in India.
Backwaters 2017 was a roaring success with students from more than 300 institutes across India including the top 20 B-schools participating in the 3 day event. The star attractions included White Knight(national level business plan competition), TEDx Talks (conducted independently by the Backwaters Committee), Chennai Super Kings: Return of Pride (live case study for the Chennai Super Kings IPL team management), Model United Nation (simulation and competition), Shiksha (training programme for high school and college students to prepare them for various competitive examinations), Avatar: The Ultimate CEO (competition to choose the best CEO), etc.
The Backwaters Committee is also part the inter-sectional fest for the incoming batch at Kampus. It also hosts simulation events with corporates (ICICI StockMind), annual quizzing events (En-Route, Bizzathlon) and debating competitions (Annual Great Debate) along with publishing an annual management magazine, MindScape. We endeavour to make Backwaters a place of learning while lighting the competitive fire in all of us which encourages us to think above and beyond the set norms; pushing boundaries and setting new standards wherever possible is what Backwaters aspires to do in the coming years.
The Cultural Committee of IIM Kozhikode is an integral part of every student's life at Kampus. Culcom, as it is popularly called, works throughout the year to ensure that the time spent at Kampus is memorable. The committee's premier event is the Annual Cultural Festival, Echoes conducted in the month of Febraury. ‘Echoes' includes a wide variety of events like Music, Dance, Theatre, Quizzes and Literary Events spread over a period of three days. Echoes acts as a platform for the students at IIMK to get to showcase their hidden talents promoting development of their softer skills, it helps students appreciate various arts forms and culture through exposure to varied performance and also promotes the culture of IIMK where management training is complemented withthe overall development of individuals.
Echoes 2018, one of the biggest cultural fests across South India was organised during February 2-4, 2018. Students from B-Schools across the country participated in the event. The event saw a total audience footfall of 10,000 students over the three days of the fest. The flagship events included the Campus Princess which saw the likes of Miss India Priyadarshini Chatterjee andthe proniteswith nation-wide known artists like Farhan Akhtar which was the major attraction in the year’s festival.
Truly capturing the essence of a Business School, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Cell is catalyst to developing the business orientation of the students at IIM Kozhikode. The interactive, learning yet enticing activities scheduled by the Committee such a Dhanda, Start-o-Sphere, Marketing Rumble are instrumental to linking developing business minds with the reality of the current world of business.
E-Cell sets the momemtum to help the student body to prepare for their subsequent entrepreurnal business line.
The Industry Interaction Cell (IIC) acts as the link that connects IIM Kozhikode to the corporate world. IIC provides the platform wherein students, academia, industry stalwarts and leaders from all the spheres of life come together and share ideas. Through its various initiatives round the year, IIC ensures that the budding managers stay in touch with the real world, while honing their skills in the classrooms. Entrusted with all the non-placement industry-related activities at IIM Kozhikode, IIC is committed to forging a long-term symbiotic relationship between the institution and the industry.
IIC provides plenty of opportunities to the student community at IIMK to test their business acumen through Live Projects offered in various domains. It allows them to have a first-hand experience of the business issues faced by organisations. IIC organizes Vertical summit where eminent speakers from different management verticals are invited to share their experiences and learnings with the students. IIC also organizes Horizons, the two day flagship annual management conclave of IIMK. IIC is also responsible for conducting all year round workshops and guest lectures from the industry practitioners .Through this initiative, IIMK has witnessed the presence of speakers like Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Late Prof C.K. Prahlad, Dr. D. Subba Rao, Dr. J.J. Irani, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Dr. Harsh Mariwala, Rakyesh Omprakash Mehra among others over last few years. The Industry Interaction Cell is looking forward to a successful academic year ahead with a number of guest lectures and workshops lined up.
In today’s ever changing world technology has become the core growth driver for any institution. We at IT committee provides the blend of Technical and Management skills together. We worked closely with the Regional Managers of all the reputed Laptop brands to provide the discounted Laptop and Accessories exclusively for the entire IIMK community. Internally, we strive hard to numerous troubleshooting request pertaining to connectivity, software issues, Email access, DC++ etc.IT Committee also organized the annual gaming tournament ‘CyberWars’ for all the game lovers. Apart from the per-defined work we worked on rolling out new IT products in collaboration with Computer Centre to make the daily routine job of students hassle-free.
Konquest is the knowledge committee of IIM Kozhikode. It assists the Students Placements Committee in the Summer Internship and Final Placements process by supporting in CV building, conducting GD-PI workshops and inviting professional experts to conduct sessions to assist the students participating in these processes. It also liaisons with different business schools for national and international level competitions and collegiate events, and organizes knowledge sharing session to enhance the preparation of the students.
Further, the committee gathers information from students vis-à-vis the internship and placements process and supports the preparation of subsequent batches by helping them gain insights into the recruiting practices of different companies which visit IIM Kozhikode.
MADCOM is the Merchandising and Design Committee of The Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode, India. It is a group of 12 IIMK students (6 of 1st year and 6 of 2nd year) responsible for all the merchandise coming to the IIMK campus. Not only do we design the merchandise but also take care of the logistics, suppliers, printing, etc.
Apart from merchandising of brand IIMK among the IIMK fraternity, we also facilitate bank loans process, safe passage of baggage for the incoming & outgoing students of IIMK.
We are a close knit committee working day in & day out with a single moto, ”Making life Easy at K” and we strive to achieve it at each day’s end.
Calicut Marathon, the flagship event of IIM Kozhikode, is the biggest student-run Marathon in the country. Started in 2010, the marathon has supported various social causes over the years with themes such as ‘Compassionate Kozhikode’, ‘Road Safety’, ‘Healthy Living’ which threw light on today’s burning issues.
After organizing Calicut mini marathon successfully for eight years, the Calicut Marathon Committee organized the Kozhikode’s first ever ‘Half-Marathon’ on February 25th, 2018 which saw more than 5000 participants running shoulder to shoulder. The theme for 2018’s Half marathon was ‘Eco-Friendly Kozhikode’ aimed at creating awareness about living in harmony with nature. A 10 KM competitive run and 3 KM Dream run were also organized as a part of the marathon for promoting the cause among the people of Kozhikode.
In order to meet the twin objectives of inculcating a sense of social responsibility in its students and to make a difference in the society in the form of initiatives that culminate in social development, Social Service Group (SSG) was formed in IIMK. SSG conducts social initiatives on behalf of the student community at IIMK to connect students with the local society in unique ways. The initiatives taken by SSG range from Expressions, an event exclusively for the support staff; Painting Auction, where paintings made by small children are auctioned; Wish Tree, an event to fulfill the wishes of orphanage children with participation of IIMK student community; Joy of Giving, where gifts are distributed to the support staff from the donations of the outgoing batch; Books Donation; Clothes Donation and Blood Donation Camp. The Flagship event under SSG is DISHA, an educational initiative through which students selected from various schools in Kozhikode attend personality development classes conducted by IIMK students at campus. Moreover, SSG also conducts a general health check up camp for the entire IIMK fraternity called 'AAROGYA'. SSG believes in the adage ‘Charity Begins at Home’, involving the students in giving back to the society, inculcating a sense of social responsibility.
The Sports committee (Sportscom) in IIMK is a student body that caters to the needs of all sports and games activities on campus. Emphasizing on the premise of a sound body and mind, the committee hosts series of sporting events round the calendar to keep the student community engaged.
Each academic year starts with Clash of Titans, a first-year exclusive tournament spanning all sporting disciplines. The committee also acts as an interface for its inter college tournament, Sangram (4-pronged B school tournament) which it hosts every alternate year. It also manages other popular intra college leagues in sports such as Football, Cricket, Basketball etc. These are held in IPL style bidding process and summons a great deal of exuberant participation and viewership.
Making sports inclusive for all of IIMK community, Sportscom also conducts Chakravyuh, an event which gauges the mettle of not just PGP students, but also FPM and staff members across 6 sports.
Public Relations Cell (PR Cell) is the first point of contact with upcoming batch of students as it creates a forum for candidates to receive mentorship and interact with seniors who have gone through the interview process and made it to IIMK. The most visible activity is the handling of social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube as well as blogging on KFiles. The committee covers all the major events happening in the college from guest lectures to fests and provides content for website update. PR Cell also is the link between the college and external publications like Hindu, ToI etc. working closely on pre event promotions and post event releases. PR Cell also comes out with two magazines - Spandan, the business magazine and Eclat, the literary magazine collaborating with students and faculty not just from the institute but also others outside. The yearbook for the graduating batch is also prepared by PR Cell.
Infrastructure Committee (IC) coordinates with various stakeholders to maintain and improve the infrastructure and Facilities for the student community at IIM Kozhikode. The main responsibility is taking care of Mess, Night Canteen, Gym and Hostel Infrastructure. Furthermore, the committee conducts Food Fest between sections, where seniors and juniors of different section participate to make the team win. InfraCom is also having events scheduled in the Cultural Fest.
The Main Objective of the Committee is to act as a communication channel between the students and the Institute authorities to resolve an issue. Matters pertaining to Gym issues, Hostel issues, mess and night mess are addressed by the InfrastructureCommittee.
InfraCom decides the menu for all the meals of the day in consultation with the residents.
The Committee monitors the cleanliness and maintenance of various facilities across the hostels and is responsible for other infrastructure related concerns.
It is under the realm of Infrastructure Committee to make the hostel authorities cognizant of the problems faced by the participants.
Apart from scheduled checks, surprise checks are also undertaken by the committee members to ensure proper hygiene in the mess.
The Committee tries to incorporate any feedback/suggestions from the residents for the improvement.
Furthermore, the committee conducts Food Fest between sections, where seniors and juniors of different section participate to make the team win. It is said to be a Miniature form of #SectionWar. InfraCom is also having events scheduled in the Cultural Fest.
Alumni Committee is a 16-member student-driven body backed by the support of the strong Alumni Office and Chairperson-Alumni Relations. It runs with the aim of fostering collaboration and loyalty and to promote the general welfare of the institution. Alumni Committee hosts few of the biggest flagship events of the campus including Nostalgia, a campus reunion, Sangam, a city chapter wise get together. It also hosts Alumni talks, sessions and workshops via Alumni Clinic. Alumni Committee marks the beginning of the academic year with an Alumni interaction to give a glimpse of its rich heritage to the incoming batch.
It now functions in collaboration with the Alumni Association that facilitates strengthening of ties between the alumni, student community and the institution.
